Trading Desk Market Update: 8/12

BTC is currently trading around $23,800 and ETH around $1,900.  Notable gainers in the last 24 hours are HT, OKB, and 10SET.  The global crypto market cap is $1.19T, down 2.1% over the last day.  DeFi Total Value Locked is ~$67b and BTC dominance is around 41%.

After a successful final testnet merge on Goerli, Ethereum developers yesterday declared a tentative total terminal difficulty, which will activate The Merge on Ethereum mainnet, allow mainnet to merge with the Beacon Chain, and move the network from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake.  Likely dates include September 15, 16, and 20.

Other news includes: The city of Buenos Aires revealed plans to deploy Ethereum validator nodes in 2023; asset manager Abrdn has taken a stake in digital securities exchange Archax; Block, the company formerly known as Square, revealed details about its previously announced crypto wallet that include a focus on safety and ease of use; drink maker Snapple unveiled a new bodega in the Decentraland metaverse; credit rating agency S&P Global downgraded Coinbase’s credit rating citing greater competition and the risk of margin compression; the founder of crypto exchange Huobi is in talks to sell his stake at a $3b valuation; digital asset services firm Zero Hash registered as a digital currency exchange provider in Australia; bitcoin miner Stronghold Digital delayed its 2Q earnings due to a “significant announcement”; miner Core Scientific cut 10% of staff; Pudgy Penguins NFT prices are rising after the project announced that selected penguins will be turned into physical toys; Cronos-based NFT platform Minted launched and announced a partnership with; DeFi platform will block wallet addresses deemed at-risk; DeFi perpetuals protocol dYdX banned addresses as a result of the Tornado Cash sanctions; MakerDAO co-founder Rune Christensen stated that it’s “almost inevitable” the DAI stablecoin will abandon its USD peg given US Treasury sanction risk; decentralized stablecoin network Interlay launched InterBTC (iBTC), a wrapped bitcoin token on Polkadot; and, Nexus Mutual voted to invest $29m of treasury funds into Maple Finance.
